Full Description
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course equips firefighters to perform prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with various medical conditions and traumatic injuries. The EMT Basic program equips students with essential skills to handle emergency situations effectively. Key skills taught include patient assessment, CPR and basic life support, airway management, bleeding control, splinting and immobilization, emergency medical care, use of medical equipment and documentation and reporting. The course includes assigned readings, discussions, online quizzes, skills labs, ambulance clinical rotations.

The program is 16 weeks consisting of 12 weeks of online learning and 4 weeks of on-campus training, skills practice, and testing at the Mississippi Fire Academy.

Students must complete 60 hours of ride-along experience with an approved EMS transport provider, during which they are required to obtain at least 8 patient care reports and transports.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE NREMT COGNITIVE EXAM: Students must meet the following requirements: Achieve a cumulative average of 75% or higher on all chapter quizzes to qualify to take the FISDAP final Exam. Earn a minimum score of 65% on the FISDAP exam (with 2 attempts allowed). Successfully complete all required NREMT-Basic psychomotor skill competencies. Document the required clinical hours.

Once a student has met all required criteria. All proper documentation will be reported to the Mississippi Department of Health and NREMT for National Registry exam Eligibility.

• TB skin Test within 90 days of first clinical, Hepatitis-B vaccine started.
• Other vaccinations requirements are dependent upon clinical site. (e.g., MMR, Varicella, Covid)
