ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS): INSTRUCTOR The course educates participants on how to adequately use instructor teaching materials, ensure that  students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide and objective skills performance  evaluation and understand AHA instructor policies to effectively train others in ACLS.

Attendees will be required to purchase an ACLS instructor package. This package contains an ACLS instructor manual, ACLS provider manual, and ACLS instructional DVD set, ACLS poster set, and ACLS crash cart card set. This is available through AHA website upon course completion.

Successful Instructor candidates must pass a multiple-choice exam with a minimum score of 84% and demonstrate proficiency in all skills.

For healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies and for personnel in emergency response.  For those who are proficient in performing BLS and ACLS skills, reading and interpreting ECGs, understanding ACLS pharmacology; and who regularly lead or participate in emergency assessment and treatment of pre-arrest, arrest, or post-arrest patients.

To enter the course, students must complete the ACLS Pre-Course Self-Assessment. Successful completion of the exam with a minimum score of 84% prior to class with printed copy of Test scores.

Successful completion of course student will receive a ACLS provider card awarded and valid for two years.

The Field delivery EMT Advanced course is designed to allow fire departments to deliver the course in a format that can accommodate their department demanding schedules. This program consists of 20 weeks and will be conducted online through the MSFA Learning Management System (LMS) and 1 week of on-campus training, skills practice, and testing at the Mississippi Fire Academy. All testing and practical skills testing will be scheduled and conducted through the Mississippi State Fire Academy.  

This program is designed for firefighter EMTs who wish to provide both basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for patients accessing the emergency medical system. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) play a crucial role in a comprehensive EMS response, equipped with the training and skills necessary for life-saving interventions. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) program covers a range of skills that go beyond basic EMT training. Key specific skills taught in the program include Advanced Airway Management, Intravenous (IV) Therapy, Pharmacology, Patient Assessment Techniques, and Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Skills. These skills prepare AEMTs to handle more critical and emergent situations effectively.

Students must complete 48 clinical hours in a MSFA approved emergency department and 36 hours ride-along experience with an approved EMS transport provider, during which they are required to obtain at least 8 patient care reports and transports.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE NREMT COGNITIVE EXAM: Students must meet the following requirements: Achieve a cumulative average of 75% or higher on all chapter quizzes to qualify to take the FISDAP final Exam. Earn a minimum score of 65% on the FISDAP exam (with 2 attempts allowed). Successfully complete all required Advanced psychomotor skill competencies. Document the required clinical hours.

Once a student has met all required criteria. All proper documentation will be reported to the Mississippi Department of Health and NREMT for National Registry exam Eligibility.

ADVANCED ROPE RESCUE WORKSHOP: WILDERNESS This advanced rescue workshop will take students out of their customary urban /
industrial setting and to the pristine cliffs of northeast Mississippi. The course will build on skills acquired in NFPA Rope Rescue Technician and apply them to the wilderness environment. Topics include artificial anchors, artificial high directional (AHDs), litter tending, horizontal rope systems, and an emphasis on individual movement on rope.  

NOTE: Students must pass entrance skills on the first day to continue in the course. Skills include ascending and descending rope, knots, anchors, & simple mechanical advantages.

ASCENDING: Ascend 30’ on a conventional sit-stand / rope access ascending system. Demonstrate the ability to down-climb 10’. Change over to descent on an approved auto-locking descender. Rappel to the ground. Complete in under 8 minutes. Two attempts allowed.

AUTOMOBILE EXTRICATION This course is an excellent guide to the basic methods of auto extrication, covering the subjects of scene safety and stabilization, patient care, and actual extrication techniques. The student is exposed to various methods and tools needed to perform an extrication. Handson practical demonstrations allow the students to utilize the local equipment in performing simulated rescues. The American Heart Association’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. BLS is geared towards prehospital providers, including EMTs, paramedics, fire fighters, and in-facility hospital providers.

CERTIFIED ADVANCED RESCUE SPECIALIST (CARS) This course is designed to bring together different types of rescue subject matter into one course. It develops through realistic, scenario-based training, team leader decision making necessary to accomplish rescue tactics in a safe manner. Course reinforces information found in earlier course prerequisites and seeks to demonstrate how the application of this information can be modified and applied to solve various rescue situations. The course includes GPS use, map reading, compasses and their use, and overland rescue techniques, to complement other subject matter from disciplines such as structural firefighting, hazardous materials, rope, confined space rescue, and other disciplines.

CHEMISTRY OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: FIRE CHEM I Chemical Hazard Analysis for Risk-Based Response

This course is designed to prepare responders, planners and allied professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to analyze hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction (WMD) incidents using the risk-based response (RBR) process that utilizes facts, science and circumstances. Primarily focused on the product involved, this analysis will also incorporate information concerning the container, environment and cause. This course supports response personnel and allied professionals seeking specialized training in advanced chemical risk assessment and analysis. The student will be able to effectively communicate the hazards and associated harm identified in a timely and concise manner to make recommendations concerning control zones, personal protective equipment (PPE) and decontamination methods to develop a safer RBR.

Through an interactive, student-centered approach, students will conduct a product hazard analysis and create communication strategies by:
Conducting an initial product hazard analysis for multiple products using limited information.

*Using the periodic table to identify the general hazards associated with a material     for developing an initial product hazard analysis.

*Conducting briefings based on their hazard analysis for hazardous materials/WMD   incidents.

*Analyzing the characteristics of molecular size, polarity and shape and how these   affect the physical and chemical properties of a material.

*Conducting a product hazard analysis to support an RBR process in a hazard   situation.

CONFINED SPACE RESCUE TECHNICIAN, NFPA 1006 This intermediate course is designed to address the knowledge and skills of Confined Space Rescue Technician of the NFPA 1006 Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications. This course addresses the OSHA requirement for entry and rescue in Permit Required Confined Spaces. The course is designed to equip rescue personnel with the skills needed to effectively respond to confined space emergencies. Participants will enhance their skills by building upon the foundational skills acquired in Rope Rescue and Hazardous Materials Technician training. The course covers topics such as incident management, hazard control, air monitoring, ventilation, and entry and rescues from confined spaces with simulated hazards.

This course is designed to help local departments prepare for technical rescue operations involving entry into confined spaces. It aims to achieve two main objectives: first, to standardize high-angle rescue information for organizations across the state, and second, to offer an off-campus training option for organizations to obtain accredited certification at the Rope Rescue Awareness and Operations levels, which is typically provided on campus in a 40-hour, week-long class.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course equips students to deliver prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages facing various medical conditions and traumatic injuries. The curriculum covers introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMRs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations for the prehospital setting.

This course will be offered in a hybrid format over 11 weeks. Students are required to attend a mandatory Zoom Orientation on the first day of class. The next 11 weeks will be conducted online through the MSFA Learning Management System (LMS) as a self-study module. Final exam testing will be held on the campus of MSFA the last week of course.

TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE COURSE: Students must achieve a cumulative average of 75% or higher on all chapter quizzes and course final. Also, student must successfully demonstrate all State required skills.

The National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) was constructed using methodology similar to that of the American Board of Medical Specialties requirements and streamlines the national recertification process into three strategic categories of continuing education: National, Local, and Individual.

This course is designed to take the EMR, EMT-B, EMT-A, and EMT-P through 2-4 days of national, state, and local continuing education hours in required topics for recertification. The recertifying student will still be required to obtain any other individual topics or other required classes by NREMT to maintain their “current” status.

EMS REFRESHER MODULE 1 (DAY 1)- 9 HOURS required topics include:  Affective Characteristics, Communicable Disease, Field Triage, Tourniquets, Oxygenation, Ventilation, CNS-Concussion, and At-Risk Populations.

EMS REFRESHER MODULE 2 (DAY 2)- 9 HOURS required topics include: Role of Research, Stroke, Psychiatric Emergencies, Immunology, Cardiac Arrest, Ventricular Assist Devices, and Post-resuscitative Care.

EMS REFRESHER MODULE 3 (DAY 3)- 9 HOURS required topics include: Pediatric Rate Disturbances, Pediatric Cardiac Arrest, ACS-Chest Pain, OB-GYN Emergencies, Endocrine Emergencies, Special Populations, and Pediatric Transport.

EMS REFRESHER MODULE 4 (DAY 4)- 9 HOURS required topics include: Culture of Safety, Pediatric Cardiac Arrest-Advanced, Congestive Heart Failure, Fluid Resuscitation, Capnography, Medication Delivery, Pain Management, Advanced Airway, and Crew Resource Management.

ENGINE COMPANY OPERATIONS This course is designed to provide firefighters with an in-depth understanding of engine company operations. This course will cover several key functions of engine company operations including nozzle selection and flow characteristics, hose line selection and hose handling techniques, hose stretch and hose lay characteristics, extended and bundle attack methods, blitz attack operations and tactical water supply strategies. This course is for all firefighters, although it is a physically demanding course, due to multiple evolutions with full firefighter personal protective equipment.

FIRE MANAGEMENT 101 This course is designed to assist the fire service leaders in addressing information not normally found in other Academy courses. Course focuses on the individual fire officer and varied management and supervisory issues. Information presented will assist the fire officer in making informed decisions required for personnel supervision and organizational change. HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT COMMANDER NFPA 470 This intermediate course is designed to address the knowledge and skills of Hazardous Materials Incident Commanders in the NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials / Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Standard for Responders. The primary focus for this course is to emphasize the importance of command and control at incidents involving Hazardous Materials. This course will require participants to manage and lead incidents involving actual hazardous material technicians mitigating emergencies. Participants will be required to complete all necessary NIMS/ICS documents, produce Incident Action Plans (IAP’s), develop specific Site Safety Plans, conduct safety briefings, lead in criminal investigations as well as any forms and documents related to criminal or terrorist investigations, incident briefs, and other task associated with actual hands-on scenario-based activities. MISSISSIPPI TRAINEE AGILITY TEST (MSTAT) The minimum standards certification process requires all candidates to successfully complete the Mississippi Trainee Agility Test (MSTAT) prior to entering an approved Fire Fighter I and II training program. In order to meet the entrance requirements for certification training and testing, the MSTAT exam must be administered at the Mississippi State Fire Academy or monitored by qualified Academy personnel at locations approved by the Board to conduct the MSTAT exam. The validity of any MSTAT qualification shall expire three hundred and sixty-five (365) days after successful completion of the exam. Candidates must have officially started an approved certification-training program within the 365-day period. Should any candidate’s MSTAT credentials expire before entering an approved certification training program, the candidate must retake and successfully complete the MSTAT exam. All subsequent

MS COUNTY FIRE INVESTIGATOR Mississippi Code 83-1-39 (Laws of 1993) designates one (1) member of each county Sheriff’s Department to be the County Fire Investigator. This intermediate course is designed to address the knowledge and skills associated with managing and executing passenger bus extrication. The course typically emphasizes rescue and extrication from school buses, but this may differ based on the needs of the agency. Typical evolutions will include identifying entry and exit paths, side wall extrication, roof extrication, stabilization, and lifting.  

*Host organization must provide one (1) school bus body and extrication tools to be used in outside     skill evolutions. The bus will be used for extrication training and will be totally destroyed.

*Students must have full personal protective clothing which meets NFPA 1971 or suitable wildland    coveralls or vehicle extrication gear for this course. Students shall bring an ANSI Type 1 rescue     helmet and gloves to class. Gloves and protective-toed boots are mandatory during field    activities. PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (PALS): INSTRUCTOR The course educates participants on how to adequately use instructor teaching materials, ensure that  students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and understand AHA instructor policies to effectively train others in ACLS.

SMOKE DIVER This advanced firefighter course is physically demanding, focusing on fire suppression and structure fire rescue. It provides realistic fireground conditions, requiring students to work as a team and understand the limitations of equipment and physical conditioning. The primary emphasis is on personal firefighter safety while functioning as a team member, exposing students to a variety of realistic scenarios. The course covers: limitations of firefighter personal protective equipment, navigation in zero visibility fire structures, interior fire attack tactics, structure fire rescue techniques, tactics for flammable liquid and gas scenarios, and rappelling with firefighter protective equipment.

TRENCH RESUCE TECHNICIAN, NFPA 1006 This intermediate course is designed to address the knowledge and skills of Trench Rescue Technician of the NFPA 1006 Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications. This course is designed to help rescuers develop the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct basic to intermediate trench rescues. The curriculum includes trench hazard assessment, emergency shoring, shoring straight trenches up to 8’, intersecting trenches, the use of supplemental shoring for deep trenches, patient packaging, and trench rescue systems.

TRUCK COMPANY OPERATIONS This course is designed to provide firefighters with an in-depth understanding of truck company operations. This course is NOT exclusively designed for fire department members who operate ladder trucks or aerial devices. The focus of the course will be to cover essential functions typically assigned to a truck company. This course will cover several key fire-ground functions including search and rescue, ventilation techniques and flow path management, forcible entry skills including through-the-lock techniques, ground ladder operations, VEIS operations and TIC search operations.

VEHICLE EXTRICATION AND RESCUE TECHNICIAN, NFPA 1006 This intermediate course is designed to address the knowledge and skills of both Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue Technician and Heavy Vehicle Rescue Technician of the NFPA 1006 Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications. Topics covered include conventional hydraulic extrication, buttress stabilization systems, hand tool extrication techniques, stabilizing, lifting, bus extrication, and medical considerations.
